SINGAPORE - A mass rally is being planned on August 17, nomination day for
Singapore’s presidential election, to protest against the government’s
refusal to allow potential candidate Andrew Kuan to run for the post of
president.

The organisers plan to hold the protest at the People’s Association
headquarters at around 11 am, when the incumbent, Mr SR Nathan, arrives to
file his nomination for re-election.

On Saturday, the island’s Presidential Elections Committee granted Mr
Nathan a “Certificate of Eligibility” to contest the election and rejected
the bids by three other applicants.

This means that come Nomination Day on August 17, the 81 year-old former
internal security chief will be returned unopposed for a second six-year
term.

In a statement, the committee said that Mr Nathan has “all the credentials
for the office of the President and is well regarded and respected for his
public service”.

It also announced its reasons for rejecting the other three applications.

It said two of them, Mr Ooi Boon Ewe, a former tutor, and Mr Ramachandran
Govindasamy Naidu, a retired senior store keeper, were rejected due to
their lack of qualifications.

“The career history of these two men obviously showed that they did not
hold any similar or comparable position of seniority and responsibility in
any other organisation or department of equivalent size or complexity in
the public or private sector, which is necessary for the office of the
Presidency,” said the statement.

As for Mr Andrew Kuan, the former Group Chief Financial Officer of JTC,
the committee argued that “the seniority and responsibility of that
position was not comparable to those needed for the office either”.

Singaporeans by and large were shocked at the announcement and newspaper
offices were flooded with calls from irate readers calling on the
government to explain the rationale for rejecting Mr Kuan’s application.

Meanwhile, online newsgroups and blogs saw tons of angry postings calling
for the government to allow Mr Kuan to stand for the election.

A posting on the soc.culture.singapore newsgroup said: “it’s pretty
obvious the MW (”men in white“, here referring to the ruling PAP government)
is NOT READY for the TEST”.

As the public outcry triggered by a huge scandal at the government-backed
NKF (National Kidney Foundation) is still fresh on many people’s minds,
the reader said the government was afraid that Mr Nathan could be defeated
at the polls.

Speaking to reporters, the organisers of the protest rally said they hoped
Singaporeans would turn out in force to pressure the government to review
their decision to reject Mr Kuan’s bid.

“The PAP government obviously owes the people of Singapore an
explanation,” said the spokesman, who refused to be named.

Mr Nathan’s office could not be reached for comment.
(I'm doing a rather technical writeup this time)

Papers

Papers this year were pretty impressive. Other than the face paper which I was involved in, there were a whole bunch of fluid papers that were worth reading. I would recommend the Vortex Methods paper which is already in production use at ILM for Star Wars : Episode III . I thought the Real-Time Framework for Single Scattering paper was a really good piece of work. Basically, you could get high quality fog (where light causes halos at different distances) at reasonable real-time frame rates. The Local Precomputed Radiance Transfer for Deformable Objects paper also caught my eye. I think the demo is already present in the latest DirectX 9 SDK. It shows the animation of the bat with transluscent flapping wings. I also like the Shadow Fields paper a lot. Even though memory requirements are somewhat prohibitive, I feel it has potential for extensions or adaptations to other techniques in the future.

Vortex Particle Method

Sketches

I didn't attend that many Siggraph sketches. I sat in on the Real-Time ray-tracing sketch. The results were really impressive but I somehow feel that the OpenRT system running on 20 CPUs or a dedicated RPU unit will be obsolete once Nvidia/ATI come out with a new shader model that supports recursion in it. Recursion seems to be one of the main limiting factors against implementing real-time ray-tracing on the GPU. Also, the global illumination demo using OpenRT wasn't that impressive IMHO.
I also sat in for the GPU tricks sketch. Both Nvidia and ATI gave the audiences some ideas for neat tricks and techniques on today's Shader Model 3.0 capable GPUs. I had read most of the slides before hand though so it wasn't totally new information to me.

Companies and their Booths

This was huge. There were tons of graphics companies at the exhibition. A lot of them were hiring. EA had a huge booth, as did Alias, Adobe, Pixar, just to name a few. There was a real-time ray-tracing demo running on the cell processor which was pretty impressive.

Back from LA. More writeups to follow hopefully. On the first day, the hotel messed up my accomodation so I had to crash in my coworker's room. It involved the topic of what one would refer to as the "after one year job crisis". Apparently, quite of few of them went through this phase after just 11 months into their current jobs. They often wondered about what they were going to do with the rest of their lives, given the current jobs that they have. I think it might hit me too next year after my masters, or maybe not... I'd say that most of them have reasonably well-paying and (hopefully) rewarding jobs at various different companies. Still, I guess the concept of work tends to hit you occasionally in the head and you start wondering about what to do with your life.

I know some of them have decided to be work at their current companies in the short term and eventually move on to do a higher degree of sorts, like an MBA. Others might be in there for the longer term. Having only worked for more than a month, I am less than qualified to comment on such issues. I do know, however, that I used to dream about getting a PhD and go into academia, doing hardcore research. That dream has kind of melted away(but maybe not completely). Getting into a good PhD program here is extremely tough, staying on is tougher and the real work starts after the PhD. Having seen my professor and other members of the research group(including myself) slave through Christmas and the New Year's has made me decide against pursuing that dream for now. Getting a position at a top school is extremely difficult, regardless of where you graduated from. Maintaining that and getting tenure in my view is one of the most challenging activities a person can impose on oneself. Ever. Hence, I have utmost respect for tenured folks at my university and other reasonably decent places. Which brings me back to my original point. I don't think I can ever match these guys. There are smart people, and then there are really smart people. I think I've seen a fair number of really smart people and even a lot of them don't make it. (One of the professors from my department just got fired recently for bad research) It's a pretty cruel and harsh environment to be in and I know my limits. Beyond a certain point, pure brilliance + hardwork starts to shine. Hardworking, smart people will succeed in most cases but for the field which I am talking about right now, you need sheer brilliance and hardwork just to survive.

Hence, I've decided to take the slightly easier route that is industry and do stuff which I am good at. It might not be as groundbreaking as academic research, but hey, at least it's something I have been doing decently at. I think that's the key: find a reasonably interesting job that you feel will bring some sort of meaning to your life. I count myself lucky these past years to have been able to do just that. Lots of people I know hate their jobs, some people have no idea what they will be doing with their degrees. Some wondered why the hell they got that degree in the first place. Getting stuck in a job that sucks and brings little meaning to oneself is like getting married to the wrong woman, maybe even worse. It's the symptom that plagues anyone who was and is still undecided with life. For the opportunity to be able to avoid this and being able to work with people who are extremely passionate about what they are doing right now, I am thankful for that.

I am still pretty uncertain about life at the current moment. These past 20+ years of my life have been sort of a rollercoaster ride. For now, I'll probably take it one step at a time, do cool, interesting stuff that I believe in and see what the future brings for me.

These are uncertain but exciting times. Or as Richard Feynman once put it," We lead a charmed life."

I'm going down to LA from the 2nd to 4th of August for Siggraph! This is exciting since I was originally supposed to go with my research group but ended up cancelling it due to my current job. However, I just found out that my company is sending me down anyway which is awesome(since I am in the division which does research implementations). It'll be an all expenses paid trip + hotel accomodation :) Plus, it will be nice to meet up with people from my lab and see the paper I worked on get presented at the conference. Definitely something to look forward to.

I guess the recent news is regarding the NKF uproar in Sg. I don't really want to say too much about it since it's been commented on by almost everyone and his/her mom. Basically, it's pretty sad that such a thing is happening but I never liked the NKF in the first place.(that and the NKF shows are bloody lame) Still, in retrospect, I feel that one of the reasons for such an angry response from the public might be due to the general (growing) fustration on the ground with regard to many domestic issues. This NKF thing is just the tip of the iceberg. Lots of people are just fed up with their personal lives I guess. When something like this comes along, everyone's emotions quite literally explode.
On a side note, with the country's birthday coming up soon, it seems to me that the majority of the fustrated people in Sg are the citizens themselves. Foreigners don't seem that pissed off(or at least they don't show that they are pissed off). It really does seem though, that foreigners, and in particular PRs, get the best deal out of the current situation. I was doing some calculations and analysis into this issue a bit and it really seems to be the case. It's great to be an expat in Sg, even better if you are labelled "foreign talent". I wonder what the future holds for the country 5 years down the road...

Something to ponder about. Personally, I feel that our parent's generation experienced the "building-up" phase of the country, where many things were not perfect but definitely improving rapidly. By the time it got to us, especially during the secondary school days, we were going through the "golden-age" phase of the country. Those were the days when everything looked calm, beautiful and fine. Ah well. Now we seem to be on the "downhill" phase. Hopefully it'll get better but with the current state of things(administration, leadership, direction, education, mentality... to name a few), I have my doubts.

Taken from LittleSpeck.

Lagging behind in the ranking game
By SEAH CHIANG NEE
In a changed landscape, Singapore's developed status has eroded, its global economic ranking overtaken by countries that had lagged behind it.
At its peak in 1997, the republic ranked among the world's top eight in per capita GDP, but after several years of economic weakness, it has now dropped to 22nd.
The recently released IMF World Economic Outlook 2005 showed Singapore at US$26,481, behind even the poorer European countries like Italy (US$31,874) and Spain (US$27,074) that it had little problem beating previously.
Other nations that were behind but have surged ahead of Singapore include Australia (US$33,629), Britain (US$30,098) and Germany (US$35,075).
Its traditional rival Hong Kong, which was slightly behind, has shot up to a dozen places above the republic at US$32,292, helped by its link to the strong US dollar.
Between 1999 and 2003, Singapore's per capita GDP at purchasing power parity fell from US$27,800 to US$23,700. At the peak, only three countries ranked higher on PPP terms; today it's 22nd.
(PPP takes into account price differences between countries for a more accurate measure of national wealth.)
To put things into perspective, Singapore's global slide was not caused solely by its trade weakness, but also by currency movements. The GDP per capita, the value of a nation's goods and services divided by the population, is measured in US dollars. The dozen or so nations that overtook Singapore were Europeans whose rankings were boosted by the powerful euro, especially over the Sing dollar.
Another major cause was Singapore's population jump due to immigration. It went from three million in 1996 to 4.18 million in 2003, the period of the ranking decline.

The island plans to push it to seven million by 2030 by immigration, which will make it hard to reclaim its former high per capita position.

The revelation couldn't have come at a less opportune time for the ruling People's Action Party, which is preparing the ground for general elections.
The slide explains why Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is leaving the bulk of Singapore's foreign affairs to his senior Cabinet colleagues to concentrate on the hard-hit economy.
However, there are bright spots. Firstly, it appears to be on the mend. In 1996, the per capita GDP stood at US$25,105 but it fell to US$20,775 in 2001. Last year, it recovered to US$26,481.
Singapore is in transition. Its economy is being restructured, which probably means that the future could be more hopeful than the present.
The state has signed a series of bilateral free trade agreements with major trading partners and invested billions to expand its life sciences, tourism, and hub activities in health, education and the performing arts.
The republic has also decided to build two mega casino resorts by 2009 after saying "no" to casinos for 40 years. When mature, all these new activities will move the economy.
But the most cheerful news has come from investments abroad.
While the domestic scene didn't measure up in recent years, its external pair of economic wings has done better.
In fact, Singapore has become quite a global investor. Between 1998 and 2003, as its GDP per capita weakened, smallish Singapore invested an incredible S$147bil abroad, doubling its total global investments to nearly S$300bil, the Department of Statistics announced last week.
More than half were in direct investments, mostly in Asia, topped by China with 37.2%, followed by Malaysia and Indonesia.
At the same time, the government's investment arm Temasek Holdings announced it had agreed to buy US$1bil of stock in China Construction Bank's initial public offering.
A number of Singaporeans have greeted Singapore's drop to 22nd position with pessimism.
One questioned if it could still be classified as a First World nation, saying it's best described as a League player dropping from Division One to Division Two.
"Forget the Swiss standard of living; Singapore doesn't even have the Spanish standard of living!" declared another writer, throwing cold water on one of Goh Chok Tong's pledges when he was prime minister.
Some blame the woes on the open-door immigration policy, pursued for more than 10 years.
"Instead of a stronger economy as promised, it has become weaker," declared one.
Singaporeans take the ranking game seriously. They drool when told that theirs is the most globalised country or the second best airport in the world, but when the grades fall, the public pessimism could also be exaggerated.
This happened last month when Singapore Airlines, which was frequently named the best airline, managed only a fourth place.
Some attribute it to rising expectation among youths who are used to the good life and anything that falls short of it represents a mini crisis.
Some simply find it hard to accept that in this competitive world, others are improving all the time.
The world has changed and so will global ranking. They will likely change more regularly with new names popping up and old ones disappearing.
Speaking about the fortune of nations, one writer said Argentina was one of the world's richest nations at the turn of the century because of its natural resources and cattle.
"Today they are nowhere near the top," he said.
Being practical, the majority of Singaporeans are less bothered by world ranking than the living reality at home.
Many multinational corporations have pulled out and the government is frantically raising skills and reducing costs (including wages), cutting into Singaporeans' living standards.
The poor are hit the hardest and the rich-poor gap has widened. The Department of Statistics said the wages for the bottom one-fifth of Singaporeans had fallen by 3.2% between 1998 and 2003.
At the same time, another survey by Housing Development Board (HDB) confirmed that the household income for those living in smaller one-room and two-room flats had declined by 17% to 14.5%.
Singaporeans who have gone through worse times see the recent past as a passing cloud.
Lee Kuan Yew has told youths not to despair because their future will be brighter. Singapore 2030 will be a flourishing global city of six to seven million people, he adds.
Singaporeans who admire his vision are hopeful that in 25 years, their city may achieve the current living standards of Switzerland (per capita GDP US$52,879).
Seah Chiang Nee is a veteran journalist and editor of the information website littlespeck.com

This is a post about work.
It has been decent so far. I get to do high-level R&D stuff(reading papers, docs and implementing them) for the next-gen consoles... which is what I wanted to do all along, at least for the summer. I also get a nice, big cubicle space overlooking the ocean. All soda, juice, coffee, tea and cookies are free... which is a nice touch. The company's pretty exciting and expanding rapidly. People I work with are cool and really enthusiastic about what they are doing. The atmosphere also seems rather easy-going and relaxed at times, with some people hanging their personal artwork and toys on their cubicle walls. Had the first studio meeting today and it was quite an eye-opener to see how the company is structured and run.
In general, the message was that the games industry is going through yet another phase shift with the arrival of the next-gen consoles. I think the industry is shifting to a higher gear in terms of budget, expenses and hiring processes. There is so much work and resources involved in making a game nowadays, especially a next-gen AAA title. I think budgets in most cases have hit the levels of many movies.
If there's ever one piece of advice for anyone wanting to do high-level technical work in the industry, I would say the following:

1. Know your math. I am not kidding. I hope you took a sufficient number of math classes in college coz you will be disadvantaged if you didn't do just that.

2. Learn to read and implement research papers. There's very little time for "training" in the industry since everything is on the cutting-edge. Few people have the patience to teach you the basics which you should have picked up on your own. If you understand point 1. though, when you get about doing 2. , you will actually realize all the concepts from 2. are actually from 1. So conceptually, there aren't really that many new things to learn. It's all of a matter of applying 1. to 2.

Note: Changed comments permissions to allow anonymous postings as well.
Just got back from LA this morning. It was a crazy 100-120 miles per hour dash back to the bay area in like 4.5 hours. LA was fun, with things like:
1) Xccelerator at Knots Berry Farm Theme Park. Shoots you from 0 to 55 mph in 2 seconds. You get shot all the way up vertically and then plummet vertically downwards before negotiating a whole host of twists and turns. It was crazy.

2) One of the best damn yakiniku places I've ever gone to. The self bbq-ed Kobe beef was amazing.

3) Going to the Karaoke place(recommended by the owners of the Yakiniku place) and staying till 3:30 am.

4) Vince's parents took us out for some pretty authentic vietnamese food yesterday. Good stuff.

5) Missed clubbing since we left Knots too late but managed to hit up Anime Expo the following day. It was...uhm... an interesting experience to say the least. Will try to put up photos if possible.

What else is there to say? Oh and I've started work. First day of work was actually pretty cool and I'm excited about the stuff I will be doing in summer. I'm surprised I got assigned to work on bleeding edge stuff already on the first day. There's no training time or tutorial since the stuff is so new, we're basically figuring out stuff(reading specs, papers, docs) as we go along. Whatever my long term plans are, I'd say that the stuff I will be learning myself in summer is definitely worth it.

This is one huge fish! I mean come on guys, you gotta be kidding me! Check out some of the comments on the site. Simply hilarious. Some of my thoughts on creationists:

1) You're definitely entitled to your beliefs. But please keep the word "science" away from what you believe in.

2) Ignoring for a moment the stuff about evolution, you have to admit that creationism is kind of lacking in the logic/reasoning department. I mean, assuming Darwin was never born and no one has ever heard of the word "evolution", selling creationism as a believable phenomenom to people with a decent amount of reasoning and judgement(a.k.a Non-Sheep) might still be kind of difficult I think?

3) Assuming that creationism is correct, this meant that the planet started out with every single kind of flora and fauna at the very beginning. Yep. That's right folks. We had walking fish, velociraptors and cheetahs all roaming together on the plains of planet earth. This means that the ecosystem at that time must have been massively fucked up. I mean, you had your pick of top predators from every single epoch on earth(from our post-evolution-theory planet) living together. Must have been a really hairy time to live back then. So god created a totally unsustainable ecosystem... that's pretty interesting. Kind of like me playing Sim Life back in the day. Where I'd populate the plains with 10 different superpredators and watch all of them die out due to lack of food. I guess (your)god's a sadist then...

One of the reasons I am writing this rant is because on the plane, this crazy-ass taiwanese american jesus-loving preacher sat beside me. And attempted to convert me over a duration of 12 hours(my flight time). Sadly for him, his efforts came to no avail. This person started off with small talk(they always do that) like,"How is Singapore's economy doing? I've been to Adam Road in Singapore! It's nice." And then proceeded with his main objective,"Ever go to church? No?! Oh you should! Especially for those studying science! You should go to church to widen your horizons!!" Then came the eventual comment that really pissed me off," Christmas. It's the most important day there is. Everyone loves Jesus. That's why EVERYONE in the world celebrates Christmas!" I'm not really sure about the "everyone" here. How about dropping this jesus-lover off somewhere in the non-christian sections of the West Bank. I bet people there would love to show him how they all love jesus.

I'm not done with my rant yet, bitches. Another thing that irks me about this particular religion(and other things...I'll get to that... you'll see) in Singapore:

It's almost used as a class distinction tool in the country. Quite a significant percentage of the higher ups, well-to-dos in society are in this religion. The language used is predominantly English(a sign of being upper-class?). Some of them also tend to look down upon those that speak Mandarin or other dialects. And for those that speak Mandarin or other dialects as their primary language, a large portion of them are not involved in this religion. I think that's pretty messed up. Personally, I feel it's really sad that society has degenerated into this current state. Religion aside, there is nothing low-class about speaking your own dialect or mandarin. People who are Chinese but can't read/write or speak their own language(a.k.a not English) should be ashamed of themselves. Don't give me this,"We are Singapore not China" bullshit. Most of you can't really speak and/or write English correctly either so you might as well shut the hell up. What's really happening in some cases is the desire to make a class distinction, either consciously or subconsciously. Both religion and language in this case have become tools for this goal.
I also like it how China is fast emerging as the next superpower. Sure, there are tons of problems with the country but it's always nice to rub news of her growing success into the faces of those who have dissed their own language and culture. You can see it in their eyes sometimes. The fear and paranoia of it all. Some of them shoot back with every possible argument they can think of, hoping to disprove the news. I find it hilarious. I find it hilarious because their arguments are often poor(I mean, these are folks who know next to nothing about China. There are loads of problems with the country but not the ones they mention due to uhm... lack of knowledge?) and are associated with the "I DON'T WANT TO KNOW! I AM COVERING MY EARS AND EYES TO EVERYTHING!" category. As I've said. You bastards amuse me. :)

Once again, I am jetlagged. So ugly that if you sold this bird to a store, it would be turned away with a one way ticket back to the amazon basin(Close to 90% of all flora and fauna comes from the amazon basin. I read it somewhere in national geographic while looking for more relevant reading articles i.e Maxim).
I'm back in Singapore for my cousin's wedding. As you can tell, it's really exciting to be in Singapore. The weather is hot and humid, the people are exceedingly obedient and the food is awesome. Yes it's true. The food in Singapore is simply amazing. And cheap too. LY was asking me what I missed most about this country and I'll tell you it's the food. It's also good to see that everyone has graduated(other than James.. 4 more years of school) and is actively contributing to the nation-building process.
I decided 4 years ago that I would be less useful to the state. Hence, I have decided to devote my working hours to the more important things in life: explosions, explosions and explosions. I start on July 1st for 10 weeks. After that, if I'm still alive, I'll continue with my coterminal masters thing for a year.
In the meantime, I look forward to SoCal on the July 4th weekend. Will either be crashing at some cheap hotel or Christine's place. Either way, it should be equally fun. It's a way of life. Some people play Naruto religiously everytime we happen to drop by the apartment. Sometimes, I wonder if Christine(before she moved back to SoCal) and Jess are there just to serve the people drinks while they start the GameCube. OK, on with review!

It's a very simple game. One of the simplest fighting games I've ever encountered. Most combos involve pressing a long string of b's followed by an occasional a. This is usually followed by people cussing & swearing in various expletives about the reasons they got owned e.g their wireless gamecube controller sucks, they had menstrual cramps, Jess was blocking the screen etc.

A brief review of the characters in the game(some intentionally left out. don't ask me why)

Naruto
-----------
I don't know how to play him. But he has kyubii when his life drops to red and his rasengan will take out 80% of your health.

Neiji
-----------
The super-kaiten combo is extremely annoying. Is actually deadly even in the hands of wireless-controller-whining players.

Zabuza
------------
The man with the big sword. Male players who use him are normally insecure about themselves.

Tenten
------------
Tenten is an annoying little bitch. She is quite possibly one of the most useless characters in the manga, next to hinata. In the game, she is actually dangerous. She's good for players who like to prance around like little fairy boys while throwing random shit at their opponents.

Sasuke
------------
He's cheap. Really. So goddamn cheap I use him most of the time. Annoys the heck out of people who hate teleporting players.

Itachi
-------------
Even cheaper than Sasuke. Cheapness must be the bloodline ability of the Uchiha.

Iruka
-------------
The deadliest of them all. I am not kidding. No one beats team useless. If I recall correctly, there was a team-useless winning streak of 10 games to 0 sometime back. Go figure. I think Iruka deserves to be the bloody hokage.

That's all folks. This concludes my fair and balanced review of naruto, the game.

I've started blogging again.
